Witcher 3 Yennefer or Triss is a pair of quest locks, not a hidden affection score. Yennefer locks through The Last Wish. Triss locks through Now or Never in Novigrad when you ask her to stay. Romancing both collapses into It Takes Three to Tango, which is a fail state rather than a third ending. Shani is a Hearts of Stone optional romance and does not replace those epilogues. Finish the lock you want before the Lodge in Final Preparations. The table lists partner, type, key quests, exclusivity, and the note that actually decides Something Ends, Something Begins; flirting in White Orchard without those quests does not count as a lock.

Yennefer and The Last Wish
The Last Wish is the djinn quest that either restores or refuses the old wish binding Geralt and Yennefer. Community romance guides treat that conversation as the lasting Yennefer lock for the main Path epilogue. Earlier flirts in White Orchard and the balloon over Oxenfurt are not enough on their own. If you skip The Last Wish, you do not get a silent Yennefer ending by accident; you simply never locked her.
Yennefer still appears in the hunt after that quest. She opens the search from White Orchard, pulls Lodge politics, and stands in Kaer Morhen. Those appearances are story jobs, listed on Witcher 3 Ciri, not extra romance meters. Now or Never can run after The Last Wish; handling Triss without asking her to stay keeps the Yennefer lock intact. Asking Triss to stay after already locking Yennefer is how you enter the double-romance fail state. If The Last Wish is still sitting in the log, that is the conversation to finish before you worry about Lodge seating.
Triss and Now or Never
Now or Never is the Novigrad mages’ flight. The lasting Triss lock is the stay/go talk at the end of that quest: ask her to stay. Kissing her earlier in Novigrad without that line does not keep her through Something Ends, Something Begins. If you send her away, she leaves the city and the main Path epilogue treats her as gone.
Triss’s story job is still Novigrad even if you refuse the romance: Lodge threads, the mage pogrom, and later Final Preparations. Do not confuse presence in a cutscene with a locked epilogue. If your plan is Triss only, skip The Last Wish’s romantic confirmation or refuse Yennefer there, then take the Now or Never stay line. The table’s exclusive column is the whole rule: one true romance through the end, not both. If Now or Never is still open, decide the stay line there; later cutscenes with Triss are not a second lock.
The fail state and Shani
It Takes Three to Tango is the party after you locked both Yennefer and Triss. The scene is a collapse, not a secret third ending. Something Ends, Something Begins will not seat both sorceresses as partners. If you wanted one of them, reload a save from before the second lock — usually before Now or Never or before The Last Wish, depending which confirmation you added last.
Shani appears in Hearts of Stone around A Matter of Life and Death and the Open Sesame! loop. She is optional, does not overwrite Yennefer or Triss epilogues, and is available whether or not you locked a main-game partner. Treat her as a Hearts of Stone side romance, then return to Witcher 3 Hearts of Stone for Olgierd, O’Dimm, and the missable Viper diagrams that share that expansion’s calendar.
If you are replaying only for a partner, the cheapest saves are before The Last Wish and before the Now or Never stay line. Everything else on the Path — Baron, Crones, Skellige, Kaer Morhen — can stay as-is. Ciri flags are a different board; kissing Yennefer does not buy the witcher epilogue, and asking Triss to stay does not kill Radovid. Keep romance locks and ending flags in separate notebooks so a failed tango does not make you reroll the Northern war.

Does Shani replace a main-game romance?
No. Shani is a Hearts of Stone optional romance. She does not replace Yennefer or Triss in Something Ends, Something Begins. You can pursue her scenes during the expansion regardless of which main Path lock you already chose. If both main locks are already confirmed, Shani will not un-fail It Takes Three to Tango; reload the second confirmation instead of hoping the expansion overwrites the Lodge party. Shani’s window is the Hearts of Stone calendar. If that expansion is already finished, you cannot recover her scenes on the same save, and she still would not un-fail a double lock.
