A hunt, then a craft.

Six school hunts

Witcher 3 witcher gear

Witcher 3 witcher gear is six scavenger-hunt schools: Griffin, Cat, Bear, Wolf, Viper, and Manticore. Diagrams first, then craft. Griffin, Cat, Bear, and Wolf are base hunts. Viper swords start in the base game; Viper armor is missable in Hearts of Stone’s Open Sesame!. Manticore is Blood and Wine grandmaster work in Toussaint. Filter by expansion and weight, then compare two schools on the slate. Damage numbers stay off the rows until CDPR publishes them. Use the rows for region and missables, then the compare slate when you are choosing a first set rather than copying an unpublished stat sheet.

Griffin, Cat, Bear, Wolf

Diagrams first. Craft second.

Griffin starts near White Orchard and Velen: a medium Sign set built around Yrden. Cat is the light Novigrad and Velen hunt, fast attacks, worn in-world by Gaetan. Bear is the heavy Skellige hunt from Yngvar’s Fang north of Urialla Harbor, a Quen-and-armor read. Wolf is the Kaer Morhen valley scavenger hunt, a free DLC diagram set with the School of the Wolf look. All four ask you to find diagrams, then spend coin and materials at a smith — the quest name is the map marker, not a loot explosion on a boss.

Upgrade tiers (enhanced, superior, mastercrafted, and later grandmaster in Toussaint) are still scavenger hunts, not random drops. If a filter hides a school, it is because that row’s expansion does not match the DLC you selected. Wolf remaining “free DLC” on paper is still a base-game valley hunt for anyone on Complete Edition / Remastered. Compare Griffin against Cat when you care about Signs versus light attacks; compare Bear against either when you want the only heavy row on the board.

Viper is missable; Manticore is Toussaint

Viper swords exist as a base scavenger hunt. The armor diagrams sit with Countess Mignole during Open Sesame! in Witcher 3 Hearts of Stone. That shop window is missable: there is no later scavenger-hunt marker if you skip her during the heist. Filter this board to Hearts of Stone before you ride into Ofier content, then grab the diagrams while the auction house is still open.

Manticore is Blood and Wine only: a Toussaint grandmaster scavenger hunt aimed at bombs and alchemy charges. You cannot start that row in White Orchard. If the save has not received the Toussaint invitation, hide Blood and Wine on the filter and work the four base schools. Remastered’s Reforge appearance swaps at Yoana and Hattori change looks without changing item stats; they are not a seventh school and they do not replace missing diagrams.

Craft order is always diagram then smith. The scavenger-hunt quest name is the map pin; killing a griffin in White Orchard does not drop a full Griffin set. If a row lists a region, ride there for the diagrams, then pay the craft cost in a town that can actually forge that tier. Grandmaster work waits in Toussaint even if you already wear mastercrafted Cat in Novigrad. Compare two schools on the slate when you are choosing a first set, not when you are chasing unpublished damage tables. Craft the diagrams you actually found. A Cat diagram in Novigrad does not become Griffin at the smith, and Toussaint grandmaster work does not appear on a White Orchard notice board.

Frequently asked questions

Which Viper pieces can I miss forever?

The armor diagrams from Countess Mignole during Open Sesame! have no later scavenger-hunt marker if you skip that shop window. Viper swords still come from the base hunt. If the heist is already over, you cannot recover the armor diagrams on that save. If Open Sesame! already closed, Viper swords from the base hunt may still craft; the armor diagrams on that save are gone. Start a new file before the heist if the armor is the reason you opened Hearts of Stone.

Do I need Blood and Wine for Griffin or Cat?

No. Griffin, Cat, Bear, and Wolf are base scavenger hunts. Blood and Wine adds Manticore and Toussaint grandmaster tiers. Hearts of Stone adds the missable Viper armor. Filter this board by expansion instead of assuming every tomb on a video belongs to the base map. Griffin, Cat, Bear, and Wolf do not need Toussaint. Filter Blood and Wine off the board until the invitation arrives, then ride Manticore as a grandmaster hunt, not as a White Orchard drop.
